Few
countries in all of Asia can match Borneos diverse and spectacular
wildlife. One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to experience
it is by boat. Our skilful Malaysian guides take us into pristine
rainforest following small rivers and streams, in water, so still
the sky and lush forest are often a mirrored reflection.
Many
different primates can be seen in family groups feeding and playing
and we can get in close for the keen nature lovers. The Proboscis
monkeys are fascinating to watch, leaping from tree to tree seemingly
unaware of our presence. On our last visit we saw Orang Utan in
the wild in several locations. Spectacular Hornbills, colourful
Kingfishers and birds of prey are just a few of the bird species.
Up to 8 species of Hornbill live near our Kinabatangan River Safari
site. Sunsets over the river can be breathtaking and we often see
fire flies at night.
Although
June and July are part of the dry season the countryside remains
lush and green and many plants are in flower. The world's largest
flower "Rafflesia" can sometimes be found and on our last visit
we photographed over 140 spectacular tropical orchids including
slipper orchids. We also photographed some of Borneo's rhododendron
begonias and many of the amazing pitcher plants. Meeting the Orang
Utan face to face is a very special and emotional experience. They
are very human like and inquisitive and in the rehabilitation sanctuaries
will often descend from the trees for a close encounter, sometimes
carrying a baby in their arms. Company director Clyde O'Donnell
is your guide on most tours and will assist keen photographers to
capture the flora and wildlife on film.
