Mount
Everest / Gokyo Region
Our
Gokyo Lakes/Mt Everest trek includes 17 mostly short days at a leisurely pace.
It is not a difficult trek and is available to most age groups including active
seniors, however we do reach approximately 5,170 meters at our highest accommodation.
Acclimatizing is
essential so we will be staying 2 nights in several villages including Namche
Bazaar. Our acclimatizing days are an ideal opportunity to explore the fascinating
Sherpa villages in this high mountain region. We usually enjoy carpets of wildflowers
and some villages have bakeries, clothing and jewellery shops. Namche Bazaar has
an excellent museum, phone and internet facilities.
We
have chosen an excellent itinerary for this trek, using the best accommodation
in each village along the trail. The higher altitudes of this trek offer outstanding
views of five of the world's 8,000 meter peaks, in clear weather above carpets
of wildflowers in Spring and Autumn. Yaks graze in and around Namchee Bazaar and
at higher altitudes.
There are some
5 opportunities to view Mt Everest (8,848 metres) which often turns orange at
sunset. The 5 aqua-blue-green glacial lakes of Gokyo are not to be found at Everest
Base Camp. The Gokyo village and nearby snowclad peaks often have a mirror image
in the pristine lakes. Gokyo is perched on the moraine of the active Ngojumba
glacier and offers superb views of Cho Oyu at sunrise. From Namchee Bazaar we
enjoy outstanding views of the majestic Ama Dablam (6,856 metres), a major highlight
for many trekkers. In clear weather we also see Makulu (8,475 meters), Nuptse
(8,153) and Lhotse. We can also visit Tangboche Monastery on our return trip from
Gokyo
Wildlife we have
seen on our most recent treks to Gokyo include Himalayan Thar, Musk Deer, Barking
Deer, Impyan Pheasants, several species of Eagles and the giant Lammergeir Vulture
and Griffons with a wingspan of almost 3 metres.
Highest accommodation
is at 5,170 metres. Optional day tours take us to 5,485 meters.
Please note:
- We fly from Kathmandu
to Lukla to begin our Trek. The Lukla airstrip has recently been extended and
has also been sealed.
- The itinerary
for Everest/Gokyo may vary depending on the weather and group fitness. Walking
times will vary. Cloudy weather may cause flight delays in or out of Lukla.
