Trekking Borneo
While much of
our Borneo Tour does not include trekking we do include an optional 3 day return
trek to Mt Kinabalu. The trek begins at an elevation of 1500 meters near the Mt
Kinabalu National Park Headquarters. The trail climbs steeply through tropical
and temperate rainforest and there are many sections of steps. Toilets and drinking
water are spaced out along the trail and provide rest points where you may often
observe wildlife and numerous wildflowers along the trail.
We only need to
carry a day pack with water, lunch, poncho, a change of clothes and a few toiletries.
Our accommodation on the mountain provide beds and meals and must be booked weeks
in advance. Our mountain accommodation is at approximately 3,100 meters and the
effects of altitude may affect some people. We climb to the summit at 4,100 meters
early the next morning.
The trek to Mt
Kinabalu is recommended for fit or experienced walkers. Alternatively you may
stay 2 nights at Park Headquarters where there are many facilities plus orchid
gardens to visit and many kilometres of magnificent rainforest walking trails.
The park is home to more than 1000 species of orchids, spectacular carnivorous
Pitcher Plants, 250 species of birds and 100 species of animals. The park provides
Ranger guided walks and slide shows.
While in Sabah
we usually do some short rainforest walks and may also hike across an island of
tropical rainforest on the West Coast. Our 12 day Sarawak Tour includes 4
5 days of trekking along the Headhunters Trail and to the Pinnacles
and is recommended for active people with a good level of fitness.
